Short Stories...

So I had students write short stories for extra credit. Among these were some interesting topics...

  1. Nazi Germany
  2. Drugs
  3. Stories written about other students
  4. Cheerleading academy
  5. A crime ring in NYC

I guess I'll be taking a trip to chat with my principal about a few of these tomorrow...

Ready for whatever comes next,

Teacher Moments

Over the past 2 weeks I've had several awesome teacher moments! Just wanted to document them...

  • I had a student ask me why I wanted to run on the trail after school. "But you're not out of shape Miss Duncan." Talk about a confidence booster!!
  • I had a student do really well on their make up quiz from a day they were absent. This student is currently failing. After doing so well, his grade came up! Now he is only 1 point from passing!! I enjoyed getting to share in this victory with him. He was very excited too!
  • After a few tough days with one specific student, I had a breakthrough. During homecoming events, he stayed in with me and got work done. He really seemed to understand the concepts I was helping him with. When he got home, his mom emailed me and told me that he had a good time in my room today and was proud of himself for the progress he made!! I was so happy that he recognized his success!
  • I have one student that has a particularly tough situation outside of school. I learned of a specific part of this situation and it really shed some light to part of his behavior from last week. I still hold him to the same standards, but I try to keep these situations in mind. Since, I have seen a change in his attitude and his outlook on math and my class. He gets his work in and seems to have a little bit of fun!
  • Today I was scrambling to find something my students could do for extra credit in my algebra 2 class since I'm a day ahead of the other teacher. At the last minute, I told students they could write a short story using terms from the last chapter. I realized this would be difficult considering what the words were so I tweaked the assignment a bit. I told students they got to determine what the new definitions of the words were. THEY LOVED IT!! I had several students go above and beyond on this assignment! I enjoyed reading some of the stories and can't wait to post them in my room!
  • Today a student gave me a potholder he made in art class. Presh.
  • I had my first observation yesterday and the principal told another teacher that I did awesome! That was for sure a relief!
I truly love my job, my kids, and the fact that I get to wake up every morning and teach them every day!!

Blessed,
Katelyn

Tough Teacher Times

I've had my first run in with kids who don't like me as their teacher. I have found that I have several students who just don't like to do their work. I also have some students who like to throw things in my room at each other and just cause a lot of behavioral problems in my room. It's SO immature and annoying, but it's something I have to constantly deal with. Because I am constantly on their case about getting their work turned in or their bad behavior they don't like me very much...

The other day I had an interesting 2nd block. I had several kids saying inappropriate things to each other and then to me and about me. I was called names that I never expected to be said right to my face! I was really surprised!! It was definitely a test of my authority. I think I handled it pretty well. And it's good to know that my administration has my back.

The next afternoon I had a student get upset about his failing grade and how he wanted a C. He then refused to do anything (not even considering that this would contribute to his failing grade). After all was said and done with him and the principal he had told her that I was a really good teacher and he was learning a lot from me (but he just didn't want to do the work).

This past weekend on the retreat I went on, one girl that goes to my school told me that her friend (whom I have in class) told her that I was the best teacher she'd ever had! Those are the moments that just remind me that I am making a difference and doing what I'm called to do.

I am learning and growing as a teacher every day. All of these good and bad experiences are shaping and molding me into (hopefully) a teacher who the students know cares for them and would do anything to help them learn and to further their well-being. I love my students and I'm glad that I have been given the chance to impact their lives!

Thankful,
Katelyn

Labor Day Awesomeness!

Last weekend I went to the lake with some of the most amazing people! One of my close engineering friend's family has a lake house. He got all our friends from school together and we planned a weekend for us to just be together on the lake hanging out and getting our fill of water sports.

I drove up after the football game on Friday night. Of course I took some work to grade, but Jacob's brother quickly nipped that in the bud. I did get some grading done, but overall I just relaxed. We all hung out on Friday night for a bit. Me and Brooke had pillow talk and headed to bed.

On Saturday we all got up super early and went out for some wakeboarding! I didn't try it that day, but it was fun to soak up the sun and watch the guys wakeboard. It felt amazing that day! We came in for some breakfast. Jacob's mom was super sweet and was always making us food even though she just had her appendix out! What a servant! After breakfast and some rest, we went back out for tubing!! I've never tubed like that before (granted, I've only tubed once before), but it was so much fun! The guys called it street tubing! We were jumping from tube to tube behind the boat and pushing each other off! It was the most fun I've had in a LONG time! After hours of tubing, we came in and got ready for dinner. We all had dinner together in the clubhouse with a couple of other families that were good friends with Jacob's family. That night, some more people came down to join us.

On Sunday we got up and had church service in the clubhouse. It was uplifting to be there worshipping with my friends! Later that afternoon we went out on the lake again. It was rainy but we had fun anyways! A few of our friends left that day. That night we went out to see the crazy people dancing at the pavilion. Jared had talked it up all weekend and it sure lived up to it!! These old rednecks dancing were HILARIOUS!!! We also watched True Grit which was REALLY good!

Monday we got up early and went out wakeboarding and on the wave runner. It was FREEZING, but we were gonna get every ounce of fun out of that weekend that we could!! I got flung off the wave runner! I even tried wakeboarding. I couldn't get up though. The waves were RIDIC! It was SO choppy out there! We came in and ate lunch. Then we all kinda chilled out and rested. A few went back out on the boat that afternoon, but I opted for the nap. Some of us played cards and just hung out. It was a lot of fun and I wish I could go back to last weekend! It was SO fun and I miss those friends so much. I love that God gave me such amazing friends and that I am able to have such fun making memories with them!

Thanking God for great friends,

Already making memories...

So I've only finished my third week of teaching, but I already have a few moments worth noting. This past week was probably my hardest week. I had several discipline problems that I had to deal with and it wasn't pleasant. I hate having to be hard and bring out my mean side, but when students challenge my authority, I'm left with no choice.

I've told them multiple times that if they do their work on time and try, they will NOT fail my class. Yet I still have almost 15 kids failing my classes. So I'm trying to motivate these students, but nothing seems to work.

I have one student that I've come to realize just doesn't have good days on Mondays. Granted, I know we all have bad days on Mondays, but he just seems to be out of it and not ready to learn. This past Monday we had a particularly bad day. He wouldn't listen or keep his head up in class. I asked and asked and asked so finally I had him go out in the hallway. I went out and had a little chat with him. He backtalked me and told me he wasn't going to take notes and that he was going to sleep. I told him he was a student and just like all the other students he needed to take notes and listen. He told me that he wasn't going to and that I might as well send him to ISS. So that's what I did. I gave him work and let him go. Later that afternoon, I chatted with my principal. She let me know that he didn't have a good home-life, but that the football coach and her would take care of any problems. The next day he came in to apologize for being disrespectful to me and told me that he would get all his work in or he wouldn't be playing on Friday night... I guess my principal took care of it! I love that I have the support of my principal and coaches when students get out of hand. The rest of the week was awesome with that student. He listened and knew how to do all of the work and was willing to help out with problems when I asked for student participation. It was a complete turn around. Hopefully it'll stay that way...

Tuesday, after that student came to apologize, I had to deal with another student in my freshman class that was being defiant. He wouldn't do his work or listen and was being completely disruptive to my teaching. I wrote him up and gave him lunch detention. I figure I'd chat with him to see what was going on. He never showed up. Apparently he did something in another class, because the next day he was in ISS. I am still frustrated and not sure what to do about him. He is failing my class and really doesn't care. My principal said I won't get any support from his parents so this is something I have to think on...

Wednesday I had a student in my algebra 2 class (the same class as the football player) that was backtalking me in class and not keeping his head up to pay attention in class. I had him go out in the hallway and we chatted. I told him he needed to listen and pay attention and at least quit distracting the other students. We came back in and he didn't do that. I made him stay after class with me. It was the last class so it wasn't a huge deal. I sat down and asked him what the deal was. He shook his head and was reluctant to tell me. Finally he said it was about a girl. We talked for a few minutes and I think we ended on pretty good terms. It's those kind of conversations and connections with students that I enjoy making.

On Thursday we had an in school volleyball match. My 14 plus students that were failing had to stay in with me even if they'd bought a ticket and complete their work. I had a student argue with me earlier that day about how he was failing, but it was because he didn't understand the material. I told him his grade wasn't made over night. I reminded him that he didn't listen in class, he didn't come see me about work he didn't understand, and that he never turned his homework in on time. He eventually got all his work in that day and got to go to the volleyball match, but I still had tons of failing kids in my room all at once, trying to make them do work. The kid that I assigned lunch detention cussed at me and I added that to his report. It was a long afternoon that day...

HOWEVER, two days in a row, I had a particularly amazing day with one class. On one day a few girls were excited because they understood something that they hadn't understood previously. They told me that it was easy and that I taught better than all their other math teachers. The next day, they told me that I was the best math teacher they'd ever had. That was the highlight of my day! I try to focus on those things because it's what makes my job worth it!

Also on one of those days, I had a girl in my algebra 2 class who told me that what we were learning was on her ACT and it was so hard before, but now she understands it and it's so easy! Once again, this was another moment where I know I'm in the right profession.

I love my kids and I really love the relationships I've developed with them, but it's hard sometimes to focus on the good moments with them when I'm dealing with discipline problems from kids who don't want to learn or don't care.

I just hope that I can continue to be a role model to them and have these precious memories every day among all the discouragement that teaching can sometimes have.

Reflecting on a tough week,
Katelyn

And the real-world begins...

It's been quite a while since I've written, and things have taken off like a rocket!!

Summer finished out with a bang! I had an amazing time getting to hang out with all my friends that I'd missed while I was at Disney... HOWEVER, I really began to miss Disney. More about that later...

I finally got my classroom at the end of July and the work began. I spent endless hours with my mom in that room getting it ready. After sorting and cleaning and painting it was all finally done! Here's what it looks like...

Of course I had to make it all cutsy! If I have to look at it for 7 hours every day it might as well look like something I want to look at!

I also got an apartment at the beginning of August! I moved into the Legacy Village with my friend Jerica that I met on our Memphis mission trip at the beginning of May. She got a job teaching at Krisle and needed a roommate. I saw it as a good opportunity to get out on my own and begin the whole real-world experience...

It's been ok so far. I am at my parents' house quite a bit. It is good to be able to come over to their house, but I love having my own place. Me and Jerica don't see each other a lot because we're usually at school or out and about. The times we have gotten to hang out have been good. We've watched movies and spent time grading papers together. I'm glad I'm getting to know her!!

So my school year started with lots of fun teacher orientation and inservices... it was a blast. NOT. So after all of that I finally got my list of students. That night I had open house. Being the teacher and talking with parents was pretty scary. Especially when I hadn't even had their kids in my class yet. The next day was my first half day with kids! I couldn't believe it! I was actually a teacher. I AM actually a teacher. It was weird and a rush and exhilarating! After that I had to get my curriculum ready for the next week. I got to know the math teacher next door to me really well. She has helped me out tremendously! So then my first week began. I was so scared. It went really well though!

I have had 2 full weeks of school now. I love it! It has its days where I come home completely discouraged, but I know that this is what I'm meant to be doing. This is what I was made for. I love getting to come to school every morning and spend time with my kids.

I will say, though, that I've found math to be a hard subject to teach. It's hard to explain things that I have such an easy time understanding. I'm getting better at it I think though.

I've had a couple of memorable moments with my kids even thus far. One of my favorites was this past Friday after the test. My 2nd block freshmen finished their test and were free to talk and hang out. Some of the girls asked what the things were on top of my cabinet. They happened to be asking about my inertia scooters for my physics class. I got them down and talked to them about using the scooters to teach force, momentum and other concepts in physics. I let them sit on them and pushed them around the room. They were all excited and said they were definitely taking physics!! It made me so happy to see them get excited about something I, myself am passionate about! Those are the moments I look forward to having more of. Those inspirational teaching moments!

On the flip side, I've already experienced a few frustrating students who just won't do their work. It's made me realize that I can't force anything on anyone. My students have to be the ones to make the decision to learn. I can only hope to be the motivation they need to take that step in the right direction.

All in all, I really love teaching! I love my kids and I love getting to come to work to spend time with them and teaching them! I am all ready for the coming week and ready to see what exciting stories and challenges it will bring! It's SO weird having a real job and being a real adult...

Truly content,
Katelyn

Best Weekend Ever

I went to Atlanta this weekend and let me just say that it was pretty fantastic! I mean, we saw any and everything that could have and would have happened at the Braves games!

Me and Daniel drove down on Friday morning. We stopped in Calhoun, GA to do some shopping at the outlet mall. That's one thing I will say about Daniel: having a guy best friend who likes to shop is AWESOME! And for him I will also mention that no, he is not gay. He just appreciates a good shopping day! I got some good teacher clothes! And then we had to head out.

Funny note: On our way to his grandparents' house, we saw a yard that had the number 88 for the Nascar driver mowed into their yard... wow.

We made it to his grandparents house and unloaded our stuff. We visited for a few minutes before heading to the game. We wanted to get there in time to go to batting practice and maybe catch a ball. There were some men that had come up with some strange contraptions to get baseballs that fell in the gap between the bleachers and the outfield wall. One man had a duct tape roll attached to a string and another man had some sort of cup on a string. Either way, they were both able to somehow pick up the lost baseballs with them. How they did it is beyond me! So anyways, we got nothing that day, but I DID get to see Chelsea!!

I was so happy to see her! Me and Chelsea haven't seen each other since before I left for Disney, so almost 7 months! I've missed her SO much! I got to meet her boyfriend. He's a super nice guy! Me and Daniel gave her our approval of him. At one point during the night, Chelsea opened a shaken up coke and it spewed all over us and the people in front of us. We laughed so hard about it as the nice people behind us offered us baby wipes. We also had the same vender guy in our section from last year who we are almost positive is "Rack 'Em Willy" from Athens! SO funny! We had so much fun! The game was AWESOME!! Braves won 11-1 which meant that was their 10,000th win!!

It was so cool to be there for that! We also got to see a firework show after the game!!

It was so fun! After saying our goodbyes to Chelsea and Chris, we headed back to the house for the night.

Saturday, me and Daniel got up and went shopping in this cute little plaza area in Downtown Atlanta. I loved it! I got so many cute clothes and found some amazing deals. I was definitely in the shopping mood this weekend. After lunch and some more shopping, we headed to the field for bp again.

We got there early and got a free poster commemorating the 10,000th win! It was pretty cool and will for sure be laminated and put in my classroom!!! Daniel got a bp ball thrown to him and I was SO jealous! He gave it to me, but being the independent girl that I am, I told him I would get my own! Eventually there was a ball hit two people down from me. This scrawny man tried to catch it but got thumped in the chest by it. Of course I pushed the guy next to me out of the way and scrambled for the ball.

The guy who got hit tried to grab it, but I am pretty scrappy as Daniel put it, and I was coming away with that ball! So of course I got it!! That man talked for the next twenty minutes about how he still didn't know how I came away with that ball. I'm good. That's how!

So we had our baseballs and of course Daniel being the nice guy that he is gave his to a little girl behind us. Not me. I AM a little girl and I'm keeping it! With out tickets for that night, we got hot dogs and drinks because Daniel found it as a deal on groupon. So the night was complete with ball park hot dogs... but that was only the beginning! We had no idea bout all the things that were about to happen at the game...

At the beginning of the game, the Braves hit a home run in the right side of our section, but not close enough for us to get it. It was pretty cool for it to be so close though. Also, as Daniel was coming back with his hot dog and coke, the Braves girls shot a t-shirt up in our section that landed 4 feet in front of Daniel. He wouldn't sacrifice the food for the shirt. Lame. Then a little later, the Nats hit a home run to our section about 6 rows back. It NAILED this woman in the head. I couldn't look, but apparently her head had split open and she was bleeding pretty bad! She eventually came back and everyone applauded her. What happened to the ball that hit her? The guy who caught it threw it back!! It was a Nats homer after all. So because of this home run me and Daniel were on TV!!! I found the link online and you can totally see us!! I have my arms in the air ready to catch it as Daniel loses it in the lights and covers his head. My dad is the one who texted me during the game and said he saw me on TV! I was so excited!! A little while later, we were also on the Jumbotron. One of Daniel's friends who was also at the game texted him telling him we were on the big screen doing the tomahawk chop!! GO BRAVES!!

(I'm wearing a read shirt and Daniel is to my right wearing a blue shirt...)
http://mlb.mlb.com/video/play.jsp?content_id=16951091

Also a little later, a man in a wedding dress jumped from the outfield seats and started running around the field! It was hilarious! The cameras were going off like crazy around the stadium.

Throughout the whole game there was a girl 2 seats down from me who was drinking like a fish. She was SO loud and obnoxious. Me and Daniel were getting super tired of her. Well then around the 8th inning she started talking to this cute little 6-year-old boy we were pretty sure had autism that was sitting right in front of me. He was adorable, but she was just embarrassing. She was loud and asking him how old he was and what grade he was in. She then proceeded to ask for a picture with him. When he was super shy and said no, she let up for a little. Then she started in again and asked if she could just take a picture of him. At this point, her boyfriend even told her she was being creepy. That poor kid's family was probably freaked out. I know I was annoyed and embarrassed that a girl would act like that. She grew louder and louder as those last 2 innings went on. Me and Daniel were so glad at the end of the game when she finally left.

After the game, we went to some different seats near home plate for the B-52's concert. It took FOREVER for them to set up, but once they started it was ok. They are SO OLD. And they aren't that good anymore. We stayed for 2 songs and sadly didn't get to hear "Love Shack." But that was ok, because me and Daniel listened to it in the car.

Oh and I even found out that Mickey is a Braves fan... should have known :)

We jammed with the windows down the whole way home. It was such a nice summer night! When we got home, we chatted with his grandparents and ate some pizza and ice cream to complete the night before checking out sportscenter to see if we were on tv. We didn't see us in the replays, but I found it today so no worries!

Overall this weekend was a blast! It was a good last summer hoorah for me. I'm ready to start my school year I guess...

So after my final fun weekend, it's time for me to get to work and for Daniel to head to grad school at Bama. At least Chelsea is heading back here so I can hang with her more!

Thankful for good friends and good memories,
Katelyn
